Elementary is Keeping it REEL

The mission of the Elementary Instruction Department is to develop a Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) based curriculum that is learner-centered and aligned to the scope and sequence in grades PK-5. Instructional Coordinators work with a cadre of talented teachers from a cross-section of the district to develop this learner-centered instruction.  In addition to completing an aligned curriculum, the coordinators create district assessments that are aligned to our scope and sequence.

Checkpoints are periodic assessments provided on the Scope and Sequence for lessons covered.  The length, scope, and frequency of checkpoints are directly correlated to the lessons covered for the grade level and content area in question. Checkpoints are provided for all grade levels and content areas in the language of instruction.

District benchmarks shall be administered in the state tested content areas and grade levels. These benchmarks are comprehensive in nature and aim to provide an exam for teachers to gauge students’ level of preparation for the designated State Assessment of Academic Skills (STAAR) test. The aligned curriculum, learner-centered instruction, and six weeks and benchmark assessments help ensure that the highest expectations of our students are met. Every elementary student in grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th receive a Data Management for Assessment and Curriculum (DMAC) progress report indicating the child’s scores on their District tests to gauge how the child would score on the STAAR assessment as of the benchmark date. Parents are asked to review the results with their child, sign, and return the form to the child’s teacher.

The Elementary Education Department oversees the following content areas:

  • English Language Arts and Reading
  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Early Childhood

Our Elementary Department hosts the following events yearly.

Spelling Bee: Our district spelling bee is held every year in the Spring Semester.

Super Outrageous STREAM Day (SOS):  Slated once in the fall and once in the spring, district-wide. Science TEKS activities aim to get students actively involved in reviewing assigned science standards critical in their grade level through lesson activities that integrate science, technology, reading, art, and math

The Elementary Department is ready to guide all our students to master all content areas and become lifelong learners who envision their success and set out to realize their dreams!
