Lyndon B. Johnson High School 9th Grade Students Learn about Indian Culture

Students at Lyndon B. Johnson 9th grade campus got the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Indian culture as part of their world geography curriculum. Students got to spend the week in different regions of the world including South Asia. The freshmen learned about India by recreating the Hindu festival of Holi which celebrates the beginning of spring by throwing powdered paint. They also flew kites as part of the Pakistani Basant festival. 

The interactive learning experience gave students 3 options to demonstrate what they learned throughout their research. They could prepare a traditional Indian dish, participate in a Bollywood dance or a five-minute yoga session. Most of the students decided to prepare a dish which gave their classmates a taste of Indian culture. 

“I wanted my students to experience a different culture in a memorable way,” said social studies teacher Jenneth Igbokwe. “These kids are going to remember this for the rest of their lives, and hopefully if they visit India they will know the meaning behind it and appreciate it more.” 

Hundreds of students participated in the fun-filled event. Teachers and students hope they can continue participating in more hands-on learning activities such as this one.
