Finley Elementary Celebrates Acceptance and Inclusion with Autism Fest

Finley Elementary closes off Autism Awareness Month with a bang, hosting their first ever Autism Fest. The celebration was organized by Finley staff in collaboration with Ramirez Middle School as a way to create autism awareness and celebrate their amazing students.

“A lot of times I think there’s a stigma that they’re different and in many ways they can be, but that makes them special,” said Finley Elementary Librarian Melissa Cantu. “They learn in their own way, move to their own groove and it’s really a beautiful thing to see.” 

Mrs. Cantu, who was also the coordinator of the event, says she and RMS Librarian Laura Ortiz wanted to do something for former Finley students in the autism unit along with the current students. Ms. Cantu added that parents of the students gladly volunteered to take care of the decorations for the beautiful event. The fun-filled festival kicked off with the ribbon-cutting of Finley Elementary’s new sensory room. Students and staff had the opportunity to learn about the sensory items inside the space and how they can benefit students with special needs. 

Afterwards, students in both the elementary and middle school units were cheered on by their peers in a parade held outside the campus. UISD Board Member and Secretary Michelle Molina, Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz and UISD administration joined in on the celebration. The festival culminated inside the gymnasium where parents and students participated in different sensory activities. Community partners such as Chick-fil-a, Texas RoadHouse, the Laredo Public Health Department and the Laredo Fire Department gave out goodies and information to the families in attendance.
