United ISD Celebrates $18,000 Donation Following First-Ever Rockin’ the Spectrum Music Festival

United ISD is celebrating the success of its first-ever Rockin’ the Spectrum Music Festival, a one-of-a-kind event dedicated to raising awareness, promoting inclusivity, and uniting the community through the universal language of music.

Thanks to the community’s overwhelming support, the event raised $18,000, which will go toward the UISD Special Education Department at United High School (UHS). The event was created in collaboration with UISD Board Secretary and District 6 Trustee, Michelle Molina, Casa Karinyo President Joe Barron, and City Council District V Member, Ruben Gutierrez.

Barron, who spoke during the check presentation press conference became emotional as he shared his family's story and the “why” leading to his passion for spearheading this event. “Seeing the everyday lives of my 13-year-old twin nephews who are on the spectrum and talking to my brother opened my eyes to the lack of resources in our city,” said Barron. “Out of a Sunday conversation, this festival blossomed into a way to bring attention and support to the kids who need it most. This was the first of many to come and I’m very proud to give the $18,000 to support the UISD Special Education Department.” Barron emphasized the spirit of collaboration, adding, “Laredo has a beautiful heart. When it comes to helping our kids, our city knows how to come together.”

Molina highlighted the impact of this funding as it will directly benefit hundreds of students at UHS. “With the largest student population in the city (UHS), we also have the largest number of children with special needs, not just for autism, but across the entire spectrum,” she said. These funds will be used to create not just one, but two sensory rooms that will serve multiple purposes, from one-on-one sessions and group therapy to speech, physical, and occupational support. “It’s going to benefit them to sooth and calm them, so they can return to the classroom ready to learn.”

The new sensory rooms will include therapeutic lighting, textures, and specialized equipment similar to existing units, but tailored to the unique needs of students at United High School.

“It's amazing what the community can do when we all come together,” added Molina.

UISD extends its deepest gratitude to all sponsors, performers, attendees, UISD various departments, especially Special Ed. and community partners including the City of Laredo Health, Parks & Rec., Fire and Police Departments, Webb County Sheriff’s Office, Webb County Constables Offices and everyone else who helped make Rockin’ the Spectrum a great success. The district looks forward to growing this tradition in years to come, for a more inclusive future for all.

UISD Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz

UISD Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz emphasized that through strong partnerships with organizations like Casa Karinyo, the City, the County, and other community partners, the district is able to bring much-needed resources and support to its special education students.
