UISD Celebrates Dr. Sinneh Koroma’s Achievement of Doctorate in Education

The United Independent School District proudly congratulates Dr. Sinneh Koroma, Dean of the United South High School Academy of Global Business and Advanced Technology Magnet, on earning his Doctorate in Education Administration and Supervision (K-12) from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Dr. Koroma’s remarkable educational journey is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and a deep commitment to student success. He began his career in education in 2001 as a classroom teacher, was appointed assistant principal in 2007, and has served as Magnet Dean since 2017.

“This accomplishment represents the culmination of years of hard work and academic commitment,” said Dr. Koroma. “I feel grateful and thankful to God and my loving family for their support. I’m excited not just for myself, but for my students to see how I can apply my learning experience to continue making a positive impact.”

Dr. Koroma holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Business Administration from Andrews University, two master’s degrees—one in Public Administration from Texas A&M International University and another in Education Administration—and now, a doctoral degree in Education and Supervision (K–12). He also earned his superintendent certification from Lamar University.

Born and raised in Sierra Leone, West Africa, Dr. Koroma’s academic path has taken him across continents, including studies at Helderberg College and Stellenbosch University in South Africa. He credits his family, particularly his wife, Dr. Gloria Koroma, DNP, and their sons, Nathan and Ethan, as key motivators throughout his journey.

“My wife received her doctorate in nursing practice in 2017, and she set the example,” he shared. “One of my students once looked at my diplomas and asked, ‘Where is the one for your doctorate?’ I told her, ‘Get your undergraduate degree, and I’ll get my doctorate.’ I’m proud to say I kept my side of the bargain.”

Upon returning to Laredo after graduation, Dr. Koroma was greeted warmly by students and colleagues. His principal, Martha Alvarez, hosted a celebratory luncheon, and he received messages of congratulations from former principals and district leadership, including Associate Superintendent Becky Morales.

“The support from our school community and our Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz has been overwhelming,” Dr. Koroma said. “It felt wonderful to share this accomplishment with them. Each one has touched my life in some way, and I thank them for that inspiration.”

A passionate advocate for lifelong learning and student success, Dr. "K" is known for his encouraging mantras like “Stay in skool, ’cause school is kool” and “Read at least one chapter a day, every day.” He emphasizes creating a safe and nurturing learning environment and consistently highlights the wealth of educational opportunities available to students in Laredo.

“I often tell my students how fortunate they are,” he explained. “Where I grew up, many never had the chance to pursue their education due to a lack of resources. Here, our students benefit from dedicated teachers, transportation, meal programs, technology, extracurriculars, and much more.”

Dr. Koroma also expressed deep appreciation for United ISD and the Laredo community. “UISD has given me the opportunity to serve and grow professionally. Our district provides students with an education that equips them to succeed and compete with their peers across the state and nation.”

As he looks ahead, Dr. Koroma remains steadfast in his commitment to education and leadership. “Our students are our future. We have a personal stake in making sure they do well,” he said. “In the words of Horace Mann, education is ‘the great equalizer.’ I’m honored to serve and will continue to do so in whatever capacity God leads me to.”
