It was a celebration of firsts and future milestones as the United Independent School District officially welcomed the Class of 2038 during its inaugural Kindergarten Signing Day held Wednesday morning at the UISD Student Activity Complex. More than 200 incoming Kindergarten students, hand in hand with their proud parents gathered for an unforgettable welcome into their educational journey.
Students were greeted with high energy as their future high school drumlines and mascots brought the festive spirit to life. As families entered the auditorium, a tunnel of cheers awaited them, formed by their elementary school principals and campus leaders from across the district who greeted their newest students with smiles, high fives and applause.
The event, inspired by the tradition of signing onto a collegiate team, gave students the chance to step on stage, receive a clear backpack and sign their official Kindergarten certificate alongside their principal. Several photo stations and themed backdrops added to the joyful atmosphere, capturing a milestone moment for students and their families.
“Today’s event marked a special milestone not just for our little learners, but for our entire district,” said Rebecca Coss-Morales, UISD Associate Superintendent of District Administration and Student Services. “Our Kindergarten Signing Day was more than just a celebration; it was our way of welcoming students and families into the United ISD family and showing them that their journey in education begins with joy, excitement, and a commitment to learning. We’re proud to be a part of their very first step!”
Among the crowd was 5-year-old Mario Valdes III, who had even more reason to celebrate, it was also his birthday. From the moment he walked in, to crossing the stage after he signed his certificate, UISD staff everywhere wished him a big happy birthday which made the day even more memorable for him and his family.

“I get to go to big school!” Mario said, beaming. “I’m so big and smart. I’m going to Kinder!”
His parents, Mario and Steph Valdes, shared how much the event meant to their son and to them as a family.
“I’ve never seen him so excited to go to school,” said Mr. Valdes. “He was already telling us, ‘Dad, you can leave me here. I’ll see you on Tuesday!’”
“It was so emotional, but it was beautiful,” added Mrs. Valdes. “Everyone cheering him on as he walked in… this really helped him. I’ve never seen anything like this before. It was a really sweet opportunity and such a special memory.”
